FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Patriots coach Jarrod Mayo has named Jacoby Brissett the starting quarterback for New England’s season opener in Cincinnati.

Brissett took over the duties from Derek Moyer, a rookie selected in the first round of the draft and shared the game with him during the preseason.

Mayo said he spoke with Brissett and Meyer separately and then together to inform them of his decision. Mayo informed the rest of the team during a meeting Thursday morning.

“A variety of factors went into making this decision,” Mayo said. “I think the hardest part was looking at both the short-term and the long-term at the same time. “As an organization, we believe Jacoby provides us with the best opportunity to win.”

But Mayo stressed that they will not consider plans to change quarterbacks at the end of the season.

“As an organization, we are 100 percent committed to Jacoby,” he said.

Brissett, who is entering his ninth NFL season, signed an $8 million contract with the Patriots in March. He returned to the team that drafted him in the third round of the 2016 draft.

Brissett spent four years with the Colts after being traded to Indianapolis in 2017. He also had one-year stints in Miami, Cleveland and Washington. He has played in 79 games, 48 of them as a starter.
