New Patriotic Party leader Anurad Kumara Dissanayake today said the appointment of former ministers Harin Fernando and Manusha Nanayakkara as presidential advisers violated electoral laws.
He said at a press conference that the Election Commission had issued a circular prohibiting new appointments during elections, and the above appointments were made in violation of the circular.
Dissanayake said President Ranil Wickremesinghe had appointed Haring and Manusha as advisers to their former ministries, saying this allowed them to interfere in the activities of those ministries and enjoy additional perks and privileges such as vehicles and funds.
He said the entire UNP camp was being supported with state funds, with UNP members like Akila Viraj, Sagala Ratnayake, Ashu Marasinghe being appointed as advisors and Navin Dissanayake being made the governor.
Dissanayake said the president violated electoral laws and misused state resources and funds to campaign, while the Election Commission was powerless to stop such behavior.
