Israel launched an attack in the southern Lebanese city of Nabatiya today, killing 10 people and injuring 5. The victims were Syrians, including a woman and two children.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health announced the news today, according to AFP. The Israeli military said the overnight attack targeted an arms depot of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, two of the five injured are in critical condition. According to Lebanese news agency NNA, all those affected are Syrian refugees working at a concrete factory in the industrial suburb of Nabatiye, AFP reported. Most of the victims are from Syria, Deutsche Presse-Agentur wrote.
Unsuspecting workers
The operator of the slaughterhouse in the affected area said it was a mixed industrial and civil development with factories producing bricks, processing metal and aluminum for construction, and a farm.
The uncle of three people killed in the strike said they were factory workers who were in their dormitory when they went on strike. He denied there were weapons in the building, the AP wrote.
The Israeli military said it struck Hezbollah weapons depots in the Nabatiya city area overnight, as well as “military buildings” of the Lebanese Islamic Movement Hezbollah in the Hanin and Maronras areas near the Lebanese-Israeli border. Hezbollah has not yet commented on the intervention, according to the Associated Press.
Retaliation for the Golan Heights attack
Tensions between Israel and Lebanon have risen in recent weeks after Israeli forces killed Fuad Shukr, a prominent commander of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, in Beirut in late July.
The move was in retaliation for a rocket attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights that killed 12 people, which Israel blamed on Hezbollah. The Lebanese movement denied responsibility for the attack.
The Hezbollah movement has now promised Israel revenge not only for Shukur’s killing, but also for the death of Ismail Haniya, the head of the political wing of the Palestinian terror group Hamas, who was killed in Iran on July 31. Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack, but Tehran has blamed it and promised revenge.
Hundreds of deaths
Cross-border clashes between Hezbollah and the Israeli army in Lebanon have killed at least 570 people since October, most of them armed members of the movement, but also more than 120 civilians, according to AFP data.
22 soldiers and 26 civilians were killed in Israel and the occupied Golan Heights, and tens of thousands of residents on both sides of the border had to evacuate their homes.
He was abducted to Gaza on October 7 last year when the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing more than 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and 251 others, sparking a war in the Gaza Strip and sparking a conflict. According to Israeli authorities, he was abducted to Gaza.
The subsequent Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip resulted in the deaths of more than 40,000 Palestinians, most of whom were civilians.
