Around 200 children benefited from the On Di Go for Christ feeding programme and Back to School Treat event held in the deprived community of St Mary’s, Islington on Saturday.
The event was started in 2020 by Aneta Ricketts and Sydie Ricketts, who along with other residents of the community embarked on a journey to help those in need, including the elderly.
“The On Di Go for Christ project was launched during the pandemic in 2020. The project was launched because there was a real need in the Islington community for a full range of catering services for the elderly, the sick, the housebound and children,” said Aneta Ricketts.
“Saturday’s reception was an event we hold every year and every year at this time we provide school packs for children in the community. People involved in the scheme come from both overseas and locally and I am very grateful for their support. The team, the Islington branch, consists of myself, my husband, the children and some community members. The attendance was very good. We served over 100 children and their parents and other people who were there,” she added.
Children from other neighbouring areas including Albany, Roadside, Joe-river, Sports Road, Baccasswood, Pimento Hill and Nutfield also benefited from the special treatment.
The children received a variety of items including cardboard, folders, pens, pencils, erasers, toothpaste, paper clips, rulers and white paper. They also enjoyed a sumptuous dinner.
Ms Ricketts said the event had a positive impact on the community and she said it was currently the only project that provided assistance to the elderly and children. She noted that the On Di Go for Christ project worked tirelessly to make minor repairs to some of the properties where the elderly live, through sponsorship from donors.
“Since this program was implemented, it has had a huge impact on me and I am someone who follows the word of God and believes in what the Bible says, ‘If you love me, feed my sheep.’ So, we do this because it is the right thing to do,” she concluded.
