Isalo: More than 4 hectares of land reduced to ashes, 2 people arrested

Devastating fires have recently engulfed Isalo, reducing bush to ash and threatening flora and fauna. The loss of life has been heavy. In the last fire on August 18, four hectares of land along the RN7 road near the Isalo reserve were covered in bushes and stones, with thick smoke rising.

Local officials said that the fire that broke out outside the reserve at 7:30 p.m. on August 18 was quickly brought under control with the cooperation of nearby residents two and a half hours after it broke out. In fact, the Isalo Reserve will not be affected.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear but it is likely arson, the second such incident in less than a month since fires broke out again around Isalo on August 3.

According to the latest information, two people have been detained before trial, they are suspected of being the cause of the fire that broke out on August 3. They face charges of “illegal charring”, “wildfire” and illegal trespassing in a protected area. The first person has been issued a detention order, the second is the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the judicial authorities.
