Mexico City (apro) – ESET, a company dedicated to proactive threat detection, has analyzed the Chinese online shopping platform Temu, the scams surrounding it and how users can protect themselves from them.

Visitors to the Better Business Bureau rate the site 2.45 out of 5, and 40% of reviews on Trutspilot are one star.

This is mainly due to spam in email inboxes, difficulty in receiving refunds, most of the items they deliver are in bad condition or they never reach the buyers.

The main scams condemned in the statement are:

  • Phishing: A method by which cybercriminals gain access to a user’s personal and financial data, either through advertisements on websites or sent in unsolicited emails.
  • ESET advises to be wary and if it’s “too good to be true,” then it’s probably a scam.
  • Celebrity Fake Advertising: Images of fake celebrity posts are presented as having business connections with Temu.

Near-infringing products: Duplicate products have been discovered that are close to the line of patent infringement.

ESET Latin America publishes the following recommendations so that users can make pleasant and safe purchases in the app:

  • Do not click on links contained in unsolicited emails or advertisements.
  • Visit the official website of the app and check out the offers visible on the internet.
  • Don’t save payment details to your account and set up two-factor authentication.
  • Don’t trust offers on Temu that ask for referral codes.
  • Be careful about the deep discounts that are applied as they could be a scam.

Temu is the Western subsidiary of Pinduoduo, a Chinese company specializing in online retail that offers users the ability to purchase products directly from manufacturers, thereby offering very low prices.

To mitigate the negative image the app had gained, Temu launched a bug bounty program to compensate those affected.
