Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said on Tuesday that the demand “lacks political logic and violates the principles of international law” and also represents “open and practical support” for Israel, according to Euronews.
Kanani said Iran was determined to contain Israel and called on the three countries to “once and for all oppose the Gaza war and Israel’s militarist policies.”
President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a phone call with Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday evening that a punitive response to aggressors was “a state’s right and a solution to stop crime and aggression,” IRNA reported.
French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Schulz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a joint statement on Monday praising Qatar, Egypt and U.S. mediators for their latest efforts to reach a deal to end the war between Israel and Hamas.
European leaders also called for the return of dozens of hostages held by Hamas and the “unhindered” delivery of humanitarian aid, and asked Iran and its allies to refrain from retaliatory measures that would further raise tensions in the region following the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail in Tehran in late July.
“We are deeply concerned about the escalating tensions in the region and are united in our commitment to de-escalation and regional stability. In this context, we call in particular on Iran and its allies to refrain from attacks that could further escalate tensions in the region and jeopardize the ability to negotiate a ceasefire and release hostages, and that they will be held accountable for actions that jeopardize opportunities for peace and stability,” the statement said.
