IPPP is expected to promote cooperation among Pacific parliaments: MPR

People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) chairperson Bambang Sosayoya expressed hope that the second Indonesia-Pacific Parliamentary Partnership (IPPP) meeting will strengthen inter-parliamentary cooperation among countries in the Pacific region.

He said the IPPP meeting to be held in Jakarta from July 24 to 26, 2024 is very important because Indonesia is an integral part of the Pacific Community in terms of identity and geographical similarities.

“(The cooperation is vital) to further strengthen parliamentary diplomacy in the Pacific region, especially in various priority areas such as economic, trade, investment, maritime and regional connectivity on land and sea,” Sosatillo said after attending the IPPP meeting on Thursday.

This is the second time that the House of Representatives (DPR) has held the IPPP after 2018. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation of the IPPP was suspended.

Soesatyo stressed that the second IPPP meeting was attended by parliamentary leaders and members from 12 countries, one region and one international organization.

The meeting was divided into three sessions, focusing on regional connectivity cooperation, improving people-to-people relations, and the ocean’s potential to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The meeting also discussed efforts to strengthen the role of women and youth, as well as friendship and cross-cultural cooperation.

This year’s IPPP also includes a dialogue with members of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG), which comprises Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji.

“This dialogue with the MSG is crucial because several provinces in the eastern region of Indonesia belong to the Pacific region and are part of the Melanesian group, namely East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, North Maluku and the six provinces of Papua,” the MPR spokesperson said.

He added that Pacific countries are united by their geography, natural resources, diversity of human resources and shared challenges.

“Indonesia’s position among Pacific countries, especially in the development of coastal communities, is unquestionable. Likewise, the People’s Republic’s participation in international forums in partnership with Pacific countries (is also imminent),” he said.
