Education is one of the sectors that has faced the most difficulties in recent years due to the pandemic and other challenges. Andrea Escobar, president of the Entrepreneur Education Foundation, spoke to Portafolio about the results of the second edition of the “Education Opinion Survey”, which showed that for families the usefulness of training is a question of interest.
What is your opinion on education?
Colombians believe that education is useful slightly more, by 14 percentage points, compared to 2022. We went from 63.9% in 2022 to 78.1% in 2023. The first time we asked the same question in rural areas, we found that 84% of them were useful. This is interesting because urban areas scored 77%.

Which regions are covered in this survey?
We have representation in new regions such as Barranquilla. We have also double-clicked on eight regions, namely Valle del Cauca, Pacific, Orinoque, Amazon, Bogota, Atlantic, Antioquia, Central and Oriental. Among them, we can especially delve into Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla, Bogota.
What about in rural areas?
This section is interesting because we have divided it into four levels: urban and urban agglomerations, intermediate rural areas, dispersed rural areas, and general rural areas.

How is quality perceived?
Regarding the quality of education, we found that there was a slight change compared to the previous year, but it was not necessarily an improvement. Last year, 40% of people thought that the situation was better, but this year this proportion dropped to 39%. Compared to last year, the number of people who thought it was the same was still 19%.
If we look at the age range, people over 65, we see that education does deteriorate by 2023. We also see that starting at age 46, people’s sense of progress declines. The challenge we face is to improve the quality of education.
What gaps did you find?
There is an important issue in rural areas, which is to improve education in these areas. The quality of education is considered to be 40% higher, and it can almost be said that the quality of education between urban and rural areas is the same. But when we asked them about urban and rural areas, they thought that the situation in rural areas is worse because the ratio is 44% while it is 38% in urban areas.
(How do you receive child benefits from the Compensation Fund?).
The knowledge area is where the investigation stops, rather than saying that the gap is where we understand the different variables that make up the education system and how we progress.
They include a question about input…
In this regard, the survey can shed light on what is the most important factor for students to achieve good academic results, apart from the materials. In the national survey results, 58.6% of the respondents said the teaching and evaluation methods of the teachers. But there are also 37% who would choose the facilities of the educational institution.
The link between materials and quality performance is not so direct.
How is dropout progressing?
One interesting topic in the survey, and in my opinion a sad fact, is that we asked what was the main reason for their children or the educated people in their family to drop out of school, and it showed that 48.6% of them fled because of the conflict and violence in the country.
(The secret to a good credit life for young people).
The second point is the way they teach and assess. This is a factor that causes 33% of people to stop going to school. If we go to rural areas, everything is connected.
How has the transition to working life been?
As we continue to study, the results have increased significantly compared to last year. 50% of people aspire to work in private companies and 45% aspire to start or create a new business. One interesting thing we found is that 50% of employed people in rural areas also work in private companies.
What do you think of education reform?
Colombia must have a deep conversation about its education system. The reality is that this country’s system does have some inequalities. Progress must be recognized.
But when we analyze Colombia, it has 4,600 goals. Of these, the highest percentage is concentrated in visits (1,383) and 834 are permanent.
(They have launched a program to provide free internet to schools in various regions).
The regional focus of the goal is not quality education. This conversation is to put on the table the importance of a deep rethinking of the education system, which is important. It must go beyond pre-school, basic classes and high school before the average.
One of the gaps in the education system is related to the gap that exists between urban and rural areas in different subjects. Andrea Escobar said that rural areas are found to be where people pay more attention to education.
“All the scores are higher in rural areas, that is, in these parts of the country, they have higher expectations about teachers, about the quality of education in rural areas, which is very interesting because we have to pay more attention to them.“said the President.
