JAKARTA (ANTARA) – Indonesia welcomes the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Israel’s policies and practices in the occupied Palestinian territories.

“This opinion meets the wishes of Indonesia and the rest of the international community for justice for the Palestinians,” Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said on its social media account on Saturday.

The court ruled on Friday (July 19) that Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territories is illegal, thus fulfilling its duty to uphold the rules-based international order.

Therefore, Indonesia believes that the Court has made it clear that all countries and the United Nations should not recognize the illegal situation caused by Israel’s illegal presence.

“In line with the court’s opinion, Indonesia urges Israel to immediately end its illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territories,” the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed.

Indonesia urged Israel to cease its illegal settlement activities and immediately evacuate all Jewish settlers from the occupied Palestinian territories.

Indonesia also called on the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council to meet the demands of the International Court of Justice and consider taking appropriate means and necessary steps to end Israel’s illegal presence in Palestine.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed: “Indonesia invites the international community and the United Nations to jointly implement the advisory opinion and recognize the existence of the State of Palestine.”

The International Court of Justice has ruled that Israel’s settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories violate international law and human rights norms.

The judgment read out by Nawaf Salam, President of the International Court of Justice, pointed out that Israel’s actions constituted a “de facto” annexation of Palestinian territory and deprived the Palestinian people of their right to self-determination.

The court, based in The Hague, held hearings from February 19 to 26, 2024, on the legal consequences of Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.

At the hearing, representatives from more than 50 countries as well as the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union spoke.
