20 August 2024 (Geneva) – International peace promoters and observers met with Rapid Support Forces (RSF) representatives in Switzerland on Sunday to address the urgent humanitarian needs of the Sudanese people and ensure the protection of civilians amid the ongoing conflict.
Delegations from the United States, Switzerland, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, the United Nations and the African Union stressed the importance of respecting international humanitarian law, fulfilling the commitments of the Jeddah Declaration, and ensuring safe access for humanitarian aid and personnel.
One of the main points of discussion was the urgent need to open a humanitarian corridor along the road from Gedaref to Wad Medani and Sennar. This corridor would significantly expand access to assistance for up to 12 million people in all Sudanese states.
Urge the Rapid Assistance Force to open areas under its control, particularly the Sennar junction, to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid.
International delegations welcomed the arrival of the Rapid Support Force in Geneva and its readiness to take further steps to protect civilians and improve the humanitarian situation.
Sudan’s decision to open the Adre crossing in Chad to humanitarian agencies has also been positively received. Once the corridor is open, the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces must ensure the safe passage of humanitarian goods and personnel.
Both sides were reminded of their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilian infrastructure, including bridges and roads that are essential for humanitarian assistance.
The delegations of all parties are willing to meet with the Sudanese Armed Forces delegation as soon as possible to further discuss and work towards resolving the crisis.
On August 18, Sudan’s Sovereignty Council announced that a government delegation would meet with U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perillo and Saudi officials in Cairo.
Perillo announced in a post on X on Tuesday that he had arrived in Cairo to brief U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on ongoing efforts to ensure humanitarian access and to meet with a delegation from the Sudanese government.
The Sudanese government boycotted a humanitarian ceasefire conference in Geneva, accusing the US government of disagreeing with its agenda and participants.
