A lot of the time, economic policy can seem pretty cold and callous—cold, hard, data-driven. But at its core, the Fed is made up of people: fallible, complex people who are just trying their best to steer the economy in the right direction.

Usually, we remember them only for their economic decisions. But today, we will be airing two episodes of the Daily Economics show. index Profiles of people inside the Federal Reserve.

First, we travel back to the 1970s to revisit Arthur Burns’s much-criticized tenure as Fed chairman. Next, we talk to Mary Daly, current president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, about her remarkable journey from high school dropout to one of the country’s foremost economic voices.

These two episodes of Indicator were originally produced by Viet Le and Brittany Cronin. Sierra Juarez and Dylan Sloan were responsible for fact checking, and Kate Concannon was responsible for program editing.

The Planet Money version was produced by Dylan Sloan, designed by Josh Newell, and edited by Dave Blanchard.
