New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Global Traditional Medicine Investment and Innovation Summit in Gandhinagar on Wednesday (April 20, 2022) in the presence of WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and said India will introduce a special Traditional Medicine visa category for foreigners who want to come to India to enjoy traditional medicine.
To cater to the growing demand for traditional medicine among foreigners, PM Modi said: “India will soon introduce a special traditional medicine visa category for foreigners who want to come to India for traditional medicine treatments.”
In his speech, PM Modi said that the potential for investment and innovation in the field of Ayurvedic medicine is limitless. “We have seen an unprecedented boom in the production of Ayurvedic medicines, tonics and cosmetics,” the PM added.
“We will create a special Ayurvedic logo. This logo will be applied on the highest quality Ayurvedic products made in India,” PM Modi added.
The Prime Minister said it was important to provide farmers who grow medicinal plants with facilities to easily connect to the market. To this end, the government is also working on modernizing and expanding the e-marketplace of traditional Indian medicines.
“So far this year, 14 startups have joined the unicorn club. I am sure that unicorns will emerge from the AYUSH ecosystem soon,” said the PM.
Talking about the contribution of Ayurveda during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Prime Minister said, “This is the first time that an investment summit has been held for the Ayurveda industry. I thought of this when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. During this period, ‘Ayurveda Kada’ and other similar products have helped people to boost their immunity.”
Besides the WHO Director-General, Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Indian Traditional Medicine Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also attended the ceremony.
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was “honoured to be here in the land of Mahatma Gandhi”.
Tedros highlighted the development area, “Long-term strategic investment and government commitment are needed to support innovation and innovators. Governments need to develop traditional medicines in a sustainable way, and bringing traditional medicines to the market must ensure that the communities that provide this knowledge can also benefit from it.”
Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth said he was very proud to attend the Indian Traditional Medicine Investment and Innovation Summit.
The Prime Minister of Mauritius added: “According to the World Health Organization, 80% of the world’s population uses traditional medicine. This medicinal knowledge should not only be respected, but also protected and promoted.”
In his speech, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel appreciated Prime Minister Modi’s efforts in the field of yoga and traditional medicine.
“Prime Minister Modi’s efforts have given yoga and traditional medicine a place in the world. Now people across the world are turning to traditional medicine. It’s time to turn to preventive medicine,” he said.
