BANDUNG (ANTARA) – Indonesia has pledged to increase its regular voluntary contribution to the United Nations Office for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to $1.2 million as concrete support for its work for Palestine refugees.

“The Indonesian government has made a new commitment to increase its regular voluntary contribution by $1.2 million per year starting from 2024,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a written statement on Sunday (July 14).

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the statement was made by Ambassador Amanata Nasir, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations, at the UNRWA “Pledging Conference” held on July 12 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

In addition to pledging to increase its annual contribution, Indonesia has pledged a $2 million grant between April and December 2024 to help meet needs in the UNRWA Emergency Appeal.

“Indonesia also expressed its commitment to seeking innovative funding for UNRWA, including by exploring collaboration with zakat administration agencies to engage Indonesian communities,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The “Pledging Conference” was held to raise additional financial contributions to support UNRWA in fulfilling its mandate to serve 5.9 million Palestine refugees in five areas: Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

At a meeting chaired by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, UN General Assembly President Denis Francis focused on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, stressing the need for an immediate ceasefire and the importance of respecting international law.

In his briefing at the agenda, UNRWA Commissioner-General Filippo Lazzarini also outlined the challenges the Agency faces in carrying out its work and sought political support from the international community for the UN agency to continue its work.

At the same time, representatives from 62 countries attending the meeting also expressed recognition and support for the role played by UNRWA for the Palestinian people and regional security, and called for a ceasefire and de-escalation of the conflict.

The participating countries also urged Israel to stop hindering the work of UNRWA in the Gaza Strip.
