Indonesia one of largest donors to UN peacekeeping: police

Bandung, West Java (ANTARA) –
Indonesia is one of the biggest contributors to U.N. peacekeeping operations, said Inspector General Krishna Mukti, head of the Indonesian police’s international relations department.

“We should be proud that the Indonesian police and army are the seventh-largest contributor to UN peacekeeping operations worldwide,” he said here on Tuesday.

He said that since Indonesia first participated in UN peacekeeping operations in 1989, it has sent 3,364 soldiers and police.

The Inspector General revealed that on October 11, 2024, Indonesia will send another 150 police force personnel to serve as the Peacekeeping Police Unit (FPU) to the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic.

He said the force, which consists of 122 male and 28 female police officers, will be tasked with protecting UN assets, supporting the distribution of humanitarian aid and protecting human rights, justice and the supremacy of the law.

He stressed that Indonesia’s participation in global peacekeeping operations is in line with the 1945 Constitution, which requires Indonesia to “participate in the establishment of a world order based on freedom, permanent peace and social justice.”

“Therefore, Indonesian police should provide their best efforts in providing services when performing peacekeeping missions,” Mukti said.

He added that in addition to boosting Indonesia’s reputation in the international community, participation in peacekeeping operations would benefit the soldiers and police carrying out the mission.

He further explained: “They will gain experience and enhance their capabilities, which will be of great benefit to them when they return home and resume their duties to the Indonesian people.”

The officers are also expected to share the knowledge and best practices gained through participation in peacekeeping missions with their colleagues upon returning home, he added.
