Jakarta(ANTARA) –
Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said on Friday that Indonesia plans to impose import tariffs of up to 200% on textiles, a move that is not targeted at specific countries such as China.
“All the steps we take are based on national interest,” he noted.
On June 25, a cabinet meeting chaired by President Joko Widodo made the decision to protect domestic industries in compliance with existing regulations and applicable international trade norms.
Luhut explained that one of the measures currently being taken is the extension of safeguard duties that have been imposed on a variety of textiles. These duties apply to all imported goods, regardless of their origin.
He added that the policy needed to be studied thoroughly so that it could be adapted to the situation and needs of the domestic industry.
“I have discussed this issue with the trade minister. While prioritizing national interests, we remain committed to partnerships with friendly countries,” Luhut said.
Luhut stressed that China remains an important strategic and comprehensive partner of Indonesia in trade and investment.
He added that Indonesia is committed to maintaining the relationship through continuous communication and dialogue on policy changes.
“We want to ensure that Indonesia’s good relations with partner countries continue to be based on the principles of mutual trust, respect and complementarity,” Luhut said.
On June 28, Trade Minister Dzulkefly Hasan proposed imposing import tariffs of up to 200% on goods, specifically mentioning China.
“The US can impose a 200% tariff on imported ceramics or clothing; we can do the same to ensure our MSMEs and industries can survive and thrive,” he said.
Hassan added that the new trade regulations were a response to previous less than satisfactory trade and local industry protection regulations.
