New Delhi (India), August 21 (ANI): India has allowed export of 2 lakh tonnes of non-basmati white rice to Malaysia, an official notification said.
India banned rice exports in July 2023 to control inflation and ensure food security.
The Directorate General of External Trade (DGFT) said in a notification on August 20, the day Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim paid a state visit to New Delhi, that rice exports to Malaysia would be allowed through the National Cooperative Exports Berhad.
In October 2023, India allowed the export of 170,000 tonnes of non-basmati white rice to Malaysia.
Previously, India had allowed the export of this variety of rice to Nepal, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Republic of Guinea, Philippines, Seychelles, UAE, Singapore, Comoros, Madagascar, Equatorial Guinea, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania and other countries, but the quantities varied.
Later, the export of some non-basmati white rice (limited quantities) was allowed subject to certain prescribed conditions. The export policy on non-basmati white rice (half-milled or fully milled, whether or not polished or glazed: others) was revised from “liberal” to “prohibited”.
While initially revising the rice export policy, the DGFT had maintained that exports would be based on permissions granted by the government to other countries to meet their food security needs and at the behest of their governments.
At the end of August last year, India also took additional safeguard measures by setting a minimum price for Basmati rice exports (reportedly at $1,200 per ton or more) to prevent the export of non-Basmati white rice, which had been included in the banned export category since July.
The West African country of Benin is one of the major importers of non-basmati rice from India. Other destination countries include the UAE, Nepal, Bangladesh, China, Cote d’Ivoire, Togo, Senegal, Guinea, Vietnam, Djibouti, Madagascar, Cameroon, Somalia, Malaysia and Liberia. (ANI)
