PONTIAK, West Kalimantan (ANTARA) – Deputy Interior Minister John Wimpy Witipo said Independence Day is a reminder for people to strengthen border areas and achieve equal prosperity in all regions.
“Regarding the regional economy, the central government stressed the need to strengthen the domestic logistics supply chain in border areas and enhance the value of handicrafts in border communities,” Wetipo said on Saturday.
He read out the Home Minister’s statement during the Independence Day ceremony held at the Entikong Cross-Border Post (PLBN) in Sangau, West Kalimantan.
Wetipo stressed the need to strengthen oversight and service governance of all PLBNs, including immigration, customs and quarantine.
He commented: “We need to conduct a detailed risk assessment of security and services to ensure that our PLBN can operate at its best.”
He explained that immigration and customs are the front-line guardians of national sovereignty.
“We have to make sure they have the capabilities they need to carry out their duties,” he said.
Wetipo called on all people living in the border areas to remain united and consistent.
“All Indonesian citizens at the border must be able to demonstrate the strength and pride of our nation,” he stressed.
He said managing national borders was a complex government business that required a five-helix approach involving government, academia, business, media and the community.
“Collaboration and the Five Helix approach are crucial to the development of border regions. Whether it is the central government, local governments, academics, business, communities or the media, each element has its own advantages,” he said.
The momentum of Independence Day is expected to serve as a starting point for strengthening border regions so that they contribute to inclusive and sustainable national development.
