An armed robbery took place at the Banco Popular in the Dominican Republic and the perpetrators are being investigated.
The Banco Popular branch, located in a gas station at the intersection of Luperón Avenue and Olof Palme Street in the Dominican Republic National District, was robbed by armed robbers at around 4:30 a.m. on Monday, June 3. The men, reportedly four in number, took suitcases filled with money. Dominican Media.
In fact, four people are suspected of being involved in this criminal act. Three of them entered the bank, while the fourth was waiting in the getaway vehicle. Media reports say that security cameras captured the moment when the attackers arrived at the scene and pointed a gun at the security guard. In the pictures posted on social networks, the media highlighted that a man can be seen dressed in black, wearing a bulletproof vest, a hat, gloves and a fake beard, brandishing a pistol. He was joined by two other accomplices, also wearing masks and dressed similarly.
The criminals fled with suitcases full of money in a black jeep with tinted windows. A source told Listin Diario that the fake beard of one of the attackers fell off during the robbery.
José Marmol, executive vice president of corporate communications at Banco Popular, said the attackers overpowered the guard and tied his hands. Fortunately, no casualties or shooting were reported. Marmol was glad that the employees and customers who were present were not injured.
The Dominican newspaper said the exact amount stolen was still uncertain and the audit team was still counting it. The National Police Central Investigation Directorate (Dicrim) and the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) quickly took control of the area, carefully inspected the premises and interviewed bank employees.
According to the financial organization’s protocol, the 11 employees present during the incident received psychological support. Diego Pesquera, spokesman for the National Police, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and teams are collecting recordings from cameras in the surrounding area. Interviews with potential witnesses are also being conducted and forensic experts are collecting the necessary evidence at the scene.
This is not the first time that the banking institution has been robbed, as a similar theft occurred in July 2015, which resulted in the death of a security guard. In response to this incident, Mármol announced that security measures would be strengthened at the bank.
“We provide the necessary security to our branches, but in this case, hardening measures are essential,” Marmor said.
