German authorities have issued an arrest warrant in connection with the damage to the Nord Stream gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea about two years ago. The news was reported to German media by dpa on Wednesday.
The suspect is a Ukrainian national who was last reported to be living in Poland and is currently hiding in an unknown location, according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Zeit and ARD television. The arrest warrant was reportedly issued by the Federal Attorney General’s Office. Her statement has not yet been obtained.
On September 26, 2022, the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines were attacked. The explosion near the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea damaged the two gas pipelines in four places. Russian gas was previously transported to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline. Due to Russia’s war in Ukraine and the subsequent political disputes, the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is not yet operational. Authorities in several countries began investigating the case. Denmark and Sweden have since ended the proceedings.
According to the investigation of the three major German media, two other Ukrainian citizens are also suspected. The report goes on to say that they may have participated in the attack as divers and placed explosive devices on the pipeline. According to media reports, these claims are based on “Information from foreign intelligence services”.
