In Germany, media coverage of Afghan refugees’ journeys to Afghanistan has sparked debate over how to preserve these people’s refugee status, with the country’s special representative for the migration agreement, Joachim Stamp, acknowledging that these people should not be allowed to stay in Germany.
“The authorities must ensure that those who apply for protection here but then return to their home country for vacation immediately lose their protection status and are no longer allowed to stay in Germany,” the official said.
Hamburg Interior Senator Andy Grote told the German news agency dpa that if refugees were returned to a country where they say they are being persecuted, their protection status should of course be reviewed.
