Improving Scouting to Promote All-round Development of Students

In order to promote the all-round development of Scout members, the Zhemgang Dzongkhag government has introduced an overhaul of the Scout program, which has been on hold since the outbreak of the pandemic.

The first batch of 200 students from 10 schools completed Scouting at Buli Central School on May 18-19, while the second batch of 200 students from another 10 schools will complete the Scouting program on May 24-25 Accept the same activity at Kampot Primary School.

Because Scouting is a school-wide event, the camp is designed to provide students with inclusive activities that focus on character development, team building, character development, confidence, and independence.

Despite having no allocated budget, the Dzongkhag education department has prioritized Scout camps. According to the education department, the program is a good blend of inspections and exposure, as most students never leave school.

Zhemgang Chief Education Officer Pelden Wangmo said the project is inclusive and an integral part of school education. “We are proposing a budget for this particular program for the next fiscal year.”

She added that the Scouting program is a school-wide effort. “In addition to day-to-day Scouting activities in schools, there is a need to transform Scout camps at the district level.”

“The project has multifaceted impacts, affecting all aspects of student development and school culture,” Pelden Wangmo said, adding that the summer camp is comprehensive and aims to train students to become responsible, capable, and actively participating members of society. .

The program is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience, covering traditional Bhutanese etiquette, outdoor survival techniques such as campfires and trekking, as well as modern pursuits such as aerobics and mindfulness training.

Additionally, the program includes activities such as pioneering and gadget making to develop various skills and abilities in students. It also covers courses on first aid, gender-based violence awareness and sexual reproductive health and rights.

Nima Zangmo Gurung, an eighth-grader at Bulli Central School, said she learned to cooperate with her peers and others. “I also learned different skills that I can use in emergencies and other times.”

“I learned time management, how to complete activities within the allotted time, scouting skills and how to influence others for a good cause from an early age,” said Loday Chozang, a 10th grader at Bulli Central School.

Recognizing the importance of the Scouting program, Dzongkhag revamped it, which had been dormant since the pandemic, with refresher training courses involving 22 teachers starting in September last year.
