The National Petroleum Agency (ANP) of Timor-Leste, in collaboration with the Australian Government through the Australian Embassy in Timor-Leste, organised a conference entitled “Australia Energy Partnership in Timor-Leste: Improving Research and Innovation through Knowledge Sharing”. The event took place on 24 July 2024 at the Auditorium of the National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL) in Hera and was attended by experts from various Australian universities and students from the Department of Petroleum Geology of the Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology (FECT) of UNTL.
The conference was held within the Timor-Leste Australia Energy Partnership Strengthening Research Institutions Program, which aims to share knowledge to not only benefit Timor-Leste’s energy sector, but also promote shared growth and develop workforce capabilities. The event included a series of lectures on topics such as transitional energy, petroleum, geology, social license and geothermal technology.
In addition to lectures, Australian scholars at the conference also participated in cultural visits to Cristo Rei, Cemitério de Santa Cruz, Centro Nacional Chega!, Archives and the Timorese Resistance Museum, and Mercado de Tais. These activities provided opportunities to explore Timorese culture and heritage and strengthen relationships with their Timorese counterparts.
The Timor-Leste Australia Energy Partnership is a joint initiative of the Timor-Leste National Planning Agency and the Australian Department of Industry, Science and Resources to promote collaborative research initiatives between institutions in both countries to drive innovation and economic growth in Timor-Leste and the region. Through this partnership, the program aims to address key challenges facing the energy sector through the preparation of a series of energy and resources-related research reports.
