The government, in partnership with the Ramciel cooperative and B’smart Technology, announced Thursday it would receive 45 truckloads of food, which will be sold at subsidized prices.
Announcing this in Juba, the country’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Joseph Mum Majak, said the food items would be sold at designated locations.
“On behalf of the Ramsar Cooperative, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Finance and Planning and other stakeholders, I would like to take this opportunity to inform the public that the government of South Sudan has imported basic food items to sell to the public,” Majak said.
“Today, we have received maize flour, wheat flour, rice and sugar,” he added.
The Trade Minister stressed that the government will continue to pursue the initiative for some time.
“The purpose of providing these food items at concessional prices is to stabilise the market and allow the public to access essential items while bridging the hunger gap.
“Some of the challenges we face center around lack of sufficient hard currency and road access, but we are working to address these issues before the floods hit,” he said.
The minister disclosed that they will also receive 30 truckloads of food from Tanzania.
But he did not explain the allocation criteria and the amount of money invested in the project.
Mabior Anyang Ajang, acting manager of B`Smart Technology, said they hope to supply food to stabilize the market. “We supply all items to stabilize the market,” he said.
