A city councillor believes more enforcement is needed around Commonwealth Stadium to stop illegal parking during big events such as concerts and football games.
Over three days last week, tens of thousands of people flocked to Commonwealth Stadium Servings for two Metal Band concert. “I’ve heard loud and clear from neighbors that there are very clear rules in place, but people are breaking them,” said Ashley Salvador, Métis district councillor.
“Community members expect that if anyone violates these rules, enforcement action will be taken, whether it’s issuing a ticket or towing the vehicle.”
Salvador, who visits the area during busy times like games and concerts, said she has witnessed illegal parking firsthand and believes more enforcement is needed.
“Some people are willing to take that risk and try to violate the rules because they may know that enforcement actions won’t be as severe as they should be,” Salvador said. “When enforcement actions aren’t followed up, it frustrates our community.”
“Enforcement is critical to stopping this behavior.”
The city is encouraging people to take public transportation to and from the stadium. During the Metallica concerts last Sunday and Friday, the Edmonton Transit Service added extra service to handle the large crowds.
“The service for this concert builds on the level of service provided at a similar event last year,” said Adonis Dichoso, ETS director of regional and special services.
DiGioso said ETS planned to accommodate about 50,000 passengers each concert night, adding that everyone left the venue within an hour after both concerts.
The city is making similar preparations for Saturday’s P!nk concert.
Global News reached out to the City of Edmonton for more information on possible enforcement plans for Saturday’s concert but did not receive a response before publication.
