Parmesh Chand, permanent secretary in the civil service department, said a directive issued in May 2023, requiring all government vehicles to be switched off when not in use, remains in force.
In a circular sent to all permanent secretaries and heads of departments, Mr Chand noted that this was part of a commitment to reduce carbon emissions and operating costs for the civil service.
“Drivers of government vehicles (except those used directly to transport His Excellency the President) are required to switch off the ignition and air conditioning when not in use,” Mr Chand said in the circular.
“In other words, drivers are not allowed to keep the vehicle’s ignition and air conditioning running while waiting.”
Mr Chand told this newspaper that the directive was still in force.
“It’s all part of an effort to cut costs and our commitment to reduce our carbon emissions wherever possible,” he said.
