Israeli forces reportedly attacked several Houthi targets in western Yemen on Saturday, following a drone attack by Houthi rebels in Tel Aviv the day before.
This is the first time the IDF has launched an attack on Yemen since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out last October.
The Israel Defense Forces posted on the “X” website: “Not long ago, IDF fighter jets attacked military targets of the Houthi terrorist regime in the Hodeidah port area of Yemen in retaliation for the hundreds of attacks on the State of Israel in recent months.”
An Iranian-made long-range drone launched from Yemen killed one person and wounded at least 10 people near the U.S. Embassy in central Tel Aviv on Friday. The Houthis claimed responsibility.
Dr. Anis al-Arasbashi, a spokesman for the Houthi armed forces’ health ministry, said the Israeli airstrikes killed three people and injured at least 87. He said most of the injured suffered severe burns.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strike was a “direct response” to an attack on Israel on Friday.
Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam said the attack would only make the Yemeni people and armed forces more resolute in their support for Gaza. Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, chairman of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council, wrote in an article on X that “the attack will be impactful.”
Hamas condemned the airstrikes in a statement, calling them “massacre and a dangerous escalation.” The attack on Yemen is likely to further stoke concerns that the war in Gaza could escalate into a regional conflict.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) said in a landmark opinion on Saturday that Israel should stop building settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. It also called for an end to the “illegal” occupation of all Palestinian territories, including the Gaza Strip.
