Transportation and land use planning often require data from multiple different sources to inform decision making. Data sources are often managed by different agencies, leading to many challenges related to data sharing and consistency.

The purpose of this collaboration was to describe data needs from a planner’s perspective and identify opportunities for sharing data resources. Here, the Federal Lands and Highways Office (FLH) and the U.S. Geological Survey collaborated to examine (1) the use and availability of spatial data in transportation planning and (2) possible mechanisms for using more shared and consistent data in a common planning environment.

Programmers who create secure web-based data sharing platforms with data viewing, analysis, and download capabilities can use the information provided here to organize data and user interfaces. This integrated view can help FLH and FLMA partners develop transportation networks that better meet the needs of local communities as well as the people of the state and nation.
