The National Institutes of Health defines clinical trials as medical research that tests treatments, devices, or drugs on humans. Clinical research is conducted under the supervision of medical professionals to determine whether these treatments, devices, or drugs are effective and safe in treating, preventing, or managing certain diseases. Research also provides tremendous benefits to patients as it facilitates access to innovative therapies and medical devices needed to address the most complex pathologies..

Furthermore, clinical research is an important source of national investment. In Colombia, clinical research contributes approximately 123.36 billion pesos to the national GDP. In addition to the economic benefits in terms of investment, employment opportunities for health professionals are also positive, especially for women. Because according to the Association of Clinical Research Centers (ACIC Columbia), 95% of research coordinators are women.

Currently, in Latin America, the pioneer in clinical research is Brazil. The World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform reports that Brazil has 21,167 active studies as of May 2024. Argentina has become a case of success and important growth, and they have made great progress in recent years, with 8,144 investigations reported to date.

In the case of Colombia, 4,141 studies were registered, almost half of the studies completed in Argentina. Catching up with clinical research certainly becomes an interesting challenge. At Amgen Colombia, we firmly believe that research, scientific progress and meeting the needs of patients in the country are tasks for all social actors. Through our Amgen Ideas program, we are working to generate local evidence to put into practice different strategies that promote a collaborative approach.

It is important to emphasize that clinical research is conducted on human beings and therefore requires the highest ethical standards, and procedures must maximize the safety of participants. In this context, we recognize that there are important challenges, but they are not impossible to face, in order to promote this scientific activity in the country..

Working with allies can have a significant impact, which is why at Amgen Idea we have a group of great academic leaders such as the National University, Pontifical Javeriana University and the University of Los Andes.

These alliances allow us to encourage student development and interest in science through training and professional experience in the medical field in R&D laboratories like Amgen.

As a country, we have a huge opportunity to boost the health sector. Some ideas include public, private and academic collaborative working. We need to adapt infrastructure and incorporate technological advances into the processes of regulatory entities like Invima to catch up with the tasks ahead of us. Clinical study shows important progress in the region today, confirmed by data from Brazil and Argentina.

The potential of Colombia to join this mission is clear, which contributes to access to innovative and advanced therapies to treat complex diseases, allows us to become a reference center with local data, strengthens the economy, but above all, understands that science is a tool to save and protect lives. It needs to be documented and proven in the local environment in order to provide well-being and health for Colombians. Now is the right time for all the actors in the health system to unite and seek a common path that will allow the country to once again become a pioneer in clinical research.
