An online video conference was held today to request the conversion of the plastic production plant in the Idali Industrial Zone into an aluminium extrusion plant.
The meeting, organized by the Ministry of Environment, was attended by: the Ministry of Urban Planning, ETEK, representatives of investors, the Movement for Better Quality of Life, the Idali Mothers Initiative, Idali Municipality researchers and the Mayor of Idali, although it lasted about three and a half hours (11:00-13:30).
During the meeting, stakeholders raised questions about the request to change the use of the factory. According to residents of the area, interested parties were told that “just yesterday, the investor submitted additional data and explanations of the investment to the Ministry of Environment.”
The same information provided by residents states, “Regarding the waste issue, it is clear that despite what the investors claimed in the consultation, they do not have an agreement with the sewage and industrial waste treatment plant in Vathia Gonia. The investors said that they intend to build infrastructure to connect to the sewer as a private initiative, but they did not specify the specifications. The above situation raises some questions because until recently they also stated that they had an agreement with the treatment plant.”
They go on to state that there is “no clear, adequate and regular control over whether a licence will ultimately be granted, in what capacity and whether it will be possible to exercise control over the investor in relation to liquid waste and plant operations”.
As the conference call took a long time and several issues were left unresolved, the Ministry of Environment informed that a new meeting would be arranged in the next period, the specific time of which has not yet been determined.
The environment ministry will respond to questions raised by residents’ groups regarding the company’s application through letters.
