FOULLY BEACH, S.C. (AP) — The husband of a bride who was killed in a car crash on her wedding night in a small South Carolina town last year will receive nearly $1 million in damages that were allegedly caused by a drunk driver.
Aric Hutchinson will receive about $863,300 from The Drop In Bar & Deli, Crab Shack and Snapper Jacks in Folly Beach; from Progressive Auto Insurance; and from Enterprise Rent-A-Car under an agreement approved this week by Charleston County Circuit Court Judge Roger Young, The Post and Courier reported.
Hutchinson filed suit against the companies after driver Jamie Lee Komoroski of Hutchinson and his new wife, Samantha Miller, 34, crashed a rental vehicle into a golf cart on April 28, 2023, after leaving a wedding reception.
The golf cart was thrown about 100 yards (91 meters). Miller died instantly, still wearing her wedding dress. Hutchinson survived but suffered a brain injury and multiple fractures. Komoroski was driving 65 mph (104 kph) on a 25 mph (40 kph) road, the newspaper reported.
Hutchinson alleged in the wrongful death lawsuit that Komoroski was “slurring his words and staggering” through several Folly Beach bars before speeding in his Toyota Camry with a blood-alcohol level more than three times the legal limit.
The settlement amount is $1.3 million, but the total will be reduced once legal costs and attorney fees are paid.
Komorowski is free on bail and her case is still pending in court. In September, she was charged with one felony count of driving under the influence causing death, reckless homicide and two felony counts of driving under the influence causing great bodily injury.
