Yesterday, Sunday, hundreds of Palestinians fled northern neighborhoods of the city of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip as Israeli occupation forces issued evacuation orders in preparation for a new military operation, considered the worst since the outbreak of the war.
In the Gaza Strip, the occupying forces stressed their intention to free Khan Yunis from Palestinian resistance, noting that the city has been repeatedly subjected to violent attacks.
Israeli warplanes dropped leaflets on Sunday morning calling on Gaza civilians to leave the Jarrah neighborhood of Khan Younis, which is considered a safe zone. In addition, the Israeli army sent text messages to residents, prompting many families to leave, knowing that they had been displaced several times since October 7 due to the continuous bombardment of the Gaza Strip.
On Sunday, families and their few belongings quickly left the Jarrah community on foot or in pickup trucks loaded with clothes or kitchen utensils.
Among them was Umm Sami Shehadeh (55), who told AFP: “I am from Gaza, I was displaced from Gaza when the war started and came to Hamad, the residential city of Khan Yunis (there). The occupation bombed us (…) and my daughter was martyred.”
She added, “We went to Rafah and then returned to the city of Hamad (…) and now with the new evacuations we don’t know where to go.”
In Gaza City, rescue workers were still working at the site of a school housing displaced people that was targeted by an Israeli attack on Saturday that killed 93 people, including women and children, according to the Gaza Strip Civil Defense.
The Israeli military justified the bombing by targeting the militants, while international condemnation continued.
Civil defense spokesman Mahmoud Basar said it would take two days to identify the martyrs, noting that “the bodies had been dismembered.”
Khan Younis witnessed more strikes on Sunday.
Palestinians poured into the city’s Nasser hospital after the attack, carrying bodies and wounded people, their shirts stained with blood, according to footage from AFP’s video service.
“They were all civilians who were buying food at the market when they were hit by missiles,” said Awad Barbah.
“More than 75,000 people have been displaced in the southwestern Gaza Strip in recent days alone,” Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner-general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), wrote on the X platform.
One Israeli was killed and another was wounded in a shooting in the northern occupied West Bank, the Israeli army announced, noting that “terrorists opened fire from a passing vehicle at several vehicles in the area.”
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will visit Russia from Monday to August 14, where he plans to meet with President Vladimir Putin.
Abbas will then travel to Türkiye to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
