Firefighters on the southern Greek island of Crete struggled Thursday to put out a wildfire that forced the evacuation of more villages in a remote mountainous area, officials said, The Associated Press reported.
The fire started burning on Wednesday and was under control after strong winds died down overnight, but it continued to rage after daybreak despite more assistance from the mainland.
Two water sprinklers and two helicopters are assisting more than 200 firefighters and a 30-member special firefighting unit in the Rethymnon area in the center of the island.
The fires destroyed olive groves and farmland and damaged irrigation networks but posed no immediate threat to the busy holiday resorts along the coast.
The fire service reported that a village near the Agia Paraskevi area in central Crete had been evacuated after several evacuation orders and warnings were issued late Wednesday.
