Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni met with a delegation from Huawei Technologies Uganda and held talks at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi.
At the meeting, the Huawei team announced plans to build a digital village prototype in Uganda.
Gao Fuwei, president of Huawei’s Sub-Saharan Africa region, told the president that the project aims to demonstrate the transformative power of digital infrastructure in rural communities.
Mr Gao highlighted the benefits of the Smart Village initiative which includes smart classrooms, learning centres, remote diagnostics and smart photovoltaics (solar energy) at no cost to the Ugandan government.
“Huawei is committed to accelerating Uganda’s digital transformation. To deliver on this commitment, we are ready to fully fund a pilot smart village project that will leverage our cutting-edge technology,” he said.
He further pointed out that the initiative is in line with Uganda’s national rural development strategy and reflects Huawei’s determination to support these areas.
President Museveni expressed strong support for the project.
“Please go ahead with the project and I will personally go and commission the smart village,” he said.
Mrs Sooma Mukyala Fouziya, Public Relations Manager at Huawei Technologies Uganda informed the President that Butaleja District has been identified as the pilot study site for smart villages.
She highlighted the project’s potential to contribute to the Parish Development Model (PDM) by promoting digital transformation and sustainable growth through ICT.
“This smart classroom will provide students with better educational opportunities, improve independent learning capabilities, and enhance information sharing and communication among residents,” said Ms Fouziya.
She also noted that the plan will establish a remote diagnosis system to connect village clinics with national and regional hospitals, thereby improving medical conditions in rural areas.
In addition, she said the project will provide green residential smart photovoltaic power generation to ensure stable and continuous power supply to residents.
Ms Fouziya also outlined Huawei’s “One Country, One Network, One Cloud, One Platform” strategy, which aims to encourage further investment and collaboration to build a smarter and more connected Uganda.
She added: “By providing concrete examples of the benefits of a unified digital ecosystem, we hope to inspire further investment and collaboration.”
She added: “The project will serve as a blueprint for future smart village initiatives across the country, demonstrating the potential of technology to transform lives and drive sustainable development while minimising the government’s financial burden.”
At the end of the meeting, the Huawei team presented the President with a plaque to symbolize their commitment to the Digital Village Prototype initiative.
Also present at the meeting were the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Matia Kasaija, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development and Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance, Ramathan Ggoobi, the Minister of State for Internal Affairs, General David Muhoozi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Aminah Zawedde and the Deputy General Manager of Huawei Uganda, Mr. Gao Jian.
