If you have a phone, you’ve likely received a lot of calls from telemarketers, many of which are illegal. But did you know you can take these companies to court? The Telephone Consumer Protection Act states that you can sue for $500 for every illegal call you receive. A stay-at-home dad named Nathen Barton has made it his mission to fight back against telemarketing companies that target him and his family, filing lawsuit after lawsuit. And he’s making a ton of money in the process.
In this episode, we explore an experiment in crowdsourced justice. What happens when the government hands over the responsibility of enforcing regulations to people like Nathan? What happens when telemarketers fight back?
The episode was produced by Willa Rubin, with assistance from Nicky Ouellet. Editing was by Keith Romer, fact checking was done by Sierra Juarez, design was done by Gilly Moon, and assistance was provided by Robert Rodriguez.
