National Police Association president Fjöllnir Salmondsson hopes the recent sentencing of a former ACT police officer will not erode public trust in the police, but is horrified.
He hopes the verdict will show that such cases are being dealt with.
“I just think it’s important for the public to get a clear message that police officers, like anyone else, cannot break the law or exceed their authority,” Fjordnier said.
Yesterday, the man was sentenced to thirty days’ probation for assault and official offence.
Fjordnier said he no longer works for the Capital Region police.
“Yes, once the case came out I discovered that his work contribution had been rejected and he no longer had an employment contract with the ACT police where he worked.”
Kicked the person who begged for mercy and lied
The verdict described how police repeatedly used pepper spray on a foreign man who was loitering outside a club in Ostrati.
The officer also kicked the man four times while he was on all fours and hit him four times with the bat, while shouting at him.
The man did not resist and asked for leniency several times.
“Clearly something went wrong there and this officer exceeded the scope of his authority,” Fjordnier said.
“But I wanted people to see that this would have consequences. Clearly, that’s not the case.”
