According to a key parliamentary source, Speaker Nabih Berri ruled out the possibility of an imminent escalation of the conflict between Israel and Lebanon and said he was communicating with US mediator Amos Hochstein.
Hochstein remains in contact with Berri, hoping that the ceasefire in Gaza will be extended to southern Lebanon. Sources told Al-Middle East that the ceasefire would allow Hochstein to travel to Beirut to negotiate with Berri to reach a solution through the implementation of Resolution 1701 and restore calm and stability.
Since Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, triggering the Gaza War, Hezbollah has been engaged in cross-border fighting with the Israeli army almost every day in support of Hamas.
According to AFP statistics, the conflict since October last year has killed at least 518 people in Lebanon, most of them armed personnel, but also 104 civilians. Israeli authorities reported that 18 soldiers and 13 civilians were killed on the Israeli side.
