Receives EU funding for Jordan facility
In May 2015, the EU confirmed €750,000 in financial assistance to Jordan’s new, larger SFP facility, marking a major milestone for the SFP.
EU support was crucial in the completion of the new facility, which is due to be operational by the end of 2016. The SFP in Jordan is the equivalent of four football fields and includes salt-water-cooled greenhouses, research facilities, outdoor vegetation areas and a solar power plant. The center will serve as a venue for local training and innovation,
SFP will work closely with regional and international players to find good solutions.
The plant is the first step in establishing a 20-hectare facility in southern Jordan.
SFP opens new office in the UK
The Sahara Forest Project has had a close relationship with the UK from the outset.
In autumn 2015, SFP was delighted to open its first permanent office in the UK.
In 2015, there were five employees working in the UK.
Participate in Milan 2015 World Expo
The Sahara Forest Project has had a pilot plant and operations in Qatar since 2012.
At the 2015 Milan Expo, the Qatari government set up an entire exhibition hall to showcase the work of the Sahara Forest Project.
Qatar showcased the SFP as a concrete example of development and innovation.
Greening Tunisia’s desert
During the Paris climate summit, and on the same day that the Tunisian Dialogue Quartet received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, the Socialist Federalist Party launched a new project in the North African country.
“Water, food and energy security are closely linked to stability and democratic development,” said Joachim Hauge, CEO of the Sahara Forest Project.
The project will initially involve a feasibility study for the establishment of a new SFP facility in Tunisia, funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
– CEO Joakim Hauge said at the launch that in the long run this will not only produce the water, food and clean energy that Tunisia desperately needs, but will also promote knowledge transfer and green jobs for the future.
2014
On June 22, 2014, the Sahara Forest Project signed an agreement with the Norwegian Embassy in Amman to establish a Sahara Forest Project launch site in Jordan and carry out related activities. The agreement was signed with the support of the Jordanian Ministry of Environment.

The second crop of cucumbers and the first grown directly from seed are being harvested. Yields are significantly higher than in a typical greenhouse in Qatar and are comparable to large British cucumbers.
The first barley and rocket crops are harvested at the Sahara Forest Project pilot plant in Qatar. The barley is harvested by local farmers using traditional methods on small farms.
After two and a half years of research, field testing and operation, a solid foundation has been laid for the implementation of the Sahara Forest Project. The Sahara Forest Project pilot facility in Qatar has successfully met expectations and confirmed the significant comparative advantages of using salt water for food production, vegetation restoration and integration of renewable processes. A results report with key findings has been published.

The agreement was signed by Yara, Qatar Petroleum and Sahara Forest Project at a signing ceremony for the construction of the Qatar Sahara Forest Project pilot facility in Oslo, under the patronage of His Excellency Jens Stoltenberg, Prime Minister of Norway, and His Excellency Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, Prime Minister of Qatar.

The findings of the Jordanian feasibility study were presented in the presence of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, His Excellency Yassine Hayat, Minister of Environment of Jordan, His Excellency Khaled Irani, former Minister of Energy and Environment of Jordan, His Excellency Grégoire Larsen, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Norway, members of the Jordanian media and civil society.
The Qatar Sahara Forest Project pilot facility is under construction.
