A highway bridge collapsed in northwest China’s Shaanxi province on Friday, killing 11 people and prompting President Xi Jinping to call for an all-out rescue effort, state media reported Saturday.
The accident occurred at 8:40 pm (12:40 GMT) on Friday in the city of Shangluo when flooding caused a road bridge to collapse, sending some vehicles into the river.
As of 10 a.m. Saturday, five vehicles were confirmed to have fallen into the water and 30 people were missing, according to state media.
Xi Jinping pointed out that my country is currently in a critical period of flood prevention, and local governments must earnestly shoulder their responsibilities and strengthen monitoring and early warning.
China’s national fire and rescue department said on Saturday it had dispatched a rescue team including 859 personnel, 90 vehicles, 20 vessels and 41 drones to the accident site.
