Raoul Hellings expects the National Party of Suriname (NPS) to win more than 10 seats in the Surinamese election on May 25, 2025.

“I want to talk about 10 or even more. It is there, you have to sweat for it, you have to make people believe in it. The most important thing after that is you have to do what you promised. Fortunately for NPS, we don’t make utopian promises. We don’t explain to you that we are going to change this country in 200 days,” the NPS member said on the Bakana Tori show.

In May, the politician and former police union president also said he believed he could get the necessary 6,000 votes to secure a seat for the national police in the National Assembly (DNA).

Although it has not yet been finalised whether Herlings’ name will be included in the Green Party’s candidate list, he did say that he has ambitions to become a representative of the people and therefore wants to be a candidate.

“I like to think of myself as a representative of the people but I don’t do that as a matter of principle. If you present yourself, you can’t go wrong. But based on what I’ve presented… if you only compare it to what we have in Parliament right now, then you’d say it has to be a lot better.

Members of parliament should not just be there to discuss small issues. They also need to start discussing the issues of organizing the country. This is achieved through legislation. This is exactly what is lacking now,” the politician said.
