Eastern Cape transport officials requested a motor grader to clear the Barkly Pass on the R58 between Barkly East and Elliot after it was closed for more than 24 hours due to heavy snow.
Eastern Cape transport department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the route was closed on Monday morning and traffic had not resumed late on Tuesday.
“We had graders sent in to clear the deep snow that had closed the road for more than 24 hours,” Binks said.
Binkos warned drivers to remain vigilant as strong winds have hit parts of the Eastern Cape.
“Strong winds continue to hit the province, damaging houses, disrupting traffic and overturning several vehicles on the N2 near Dutiva.
“We urge road users, especially drivers, to be extra cautious and avoid the roads altogether if travel is not essential,” Binkos said.
