NIAMEY, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) — Heavy rains have killed 94 people, injured 93 and affected 137,156 people in Niger since the rainy season began in May, the Niger government said.
Of the deaths, 44 people died due to flooding and 50 due to the collapse of houses, Humanitarian Action and Disaster Management Minister Aissa Lawan Wandarma said at a press conference on Thursday.
According to the minister, all eight regions of the country were hit by floods, affecting 692 villages, 129 townships and 46 provinces.
A total of 14,045 houses collapsed, 502 huts were destroyed, 15,472 livestock were lost, 2,763 hectares of farmland were flooded, 17,495 tons of food were destroyed, and 37 classrooms were damaged.
Wandama said that so far, the food distribution operation is ongoing and a large number of food and non-food kits are on the way.
In addition, the government has taken necessary measures to ensure that all people affected by the floods receive the assistance they need.
As August is the month with the heaviest rainfall, Wandama called on people to leave their homes in risky areas, protect drainage facilities and repair houses in poor condition. She also urged the affected people to leave the ruins of their homes to avoid contracting diseases.
