Heavy rains in Mumbai cause traffic chaos, Andheri Metro station flooded

Incessant rain overnight and in the morning brought Mumbai to a standstill, affecting public transport services and causing inconvenience to numerous commuters.

According to the weather department, high tide will occur at sea at 11:28 am, with waves as high as 4.24 meters. This coincides with heavy rains, raising concerns about potential flooding. Mumbai and Palghar are under yellow alert, while Thane district faces a more serious orange alert.

Yesterday, central Mumbai received an average rainfall of 78 mm, while east and west Mumbai received 57 mm and 67 mm respectively. The Meteorological Office has predicted moderate to heavy rain in the city, which means heavy rains are likely to continue, compounding the current challenges.

Public transport services in Mumbai were severely affected. Incessant rains caused waterlogging on roads and railway tracks, resulting in delays in suburban train services, which ran 15 to 20 minutes behind schedule. Waterlogging on the tracks at Chunabhatti on the Harbour Line, coupled with high tides, slowed train movement.

Central Railway’s main line was delayed again due to a technical fault in a train engine. Western Railway said its suburban services were still running but not without challenges. All three lines, Central, Western and Port, were running 10 minutes late.

The Andheli Metro, a key transport hub for commuters, was closed due to severe waterlogging. Incessant rains left the metro station impassable due to waterlogging. However, the metro was reopened later in the day after the water receded.

Heavy rains have lashed Thane district since midnight. Waterlogging has accumulated at Thane Vandana bus stand and a local market, disrupting daily activities.

In Nagpur, heavy rain alerts have led to the closure of schools across the district. Nagpur District Collector Dr Vipin Itankar told NDTV that all schools will remain closed today. While flight schedules at Nagpur airport have not been affected, the situation in Bhiwandi city is critical. Heavy rains have led to waterlogging in several areas of the city since morning, including knee-deep water in Teen Batti area of ​​Sabzi Bazar. If the rain continues, many low-lying areas are likely to be flooded with water into houses and shops.
