Heavy rain and snow are expected in parts of the country

New Delhi: Delhi is likely to have clear skies, Uttarakhand is likely to remain drier than previous days, Bihar and Odisha will see heavy rains while parts of Jammu and Kashmir may even see snowfall for a few days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday (October 19) predicted heavy rain or snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir on October 23. “A major western disturbance is approaching which will particularly affect the western Himalayas. Therefore, we expect an increase in snowfall activity over the western Himalayas. We expect heavy rain or snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir on October 23,” Naresh Kumar, senior scientist at the IMD, told ANI.

He further said that adjoining areas such as Punjab and isolated places in Haryana will also receive light rain in the next few days. Kumar also said that Uttarakhand received up to 40 cm of rainfall and Himachal Pradesh received extremely heavy rainfall till Monday. “As of yesterday (October 18), western Uttar Pradesh received up to 17 cm of rainfall,” said a senior scientist at the Indian Institute of Meteorological Management.

The senior scientist said that as of yesterday, central Madhya Pradesh was still under a low pressure area. However, a western disturbance was present near the latitude of Jammu and Kashmir. Bihar is also expected to receive heavy rains. “Due to the low pressure over Bihar, we expect heavy rains over Bihar,” he added.

The Indian Meteorological Department said on Tuesday (October 19) that dry weather is likely to occur in Uttarakhand and its adjoining areas over the next three days.

The weather department also said that although the low pressure system formed in the Gangetic basin south of West Bengal has moved towards Bihar, heavy rainfall is likely to continue till Thursday (October 21) morning. The weatherman warned that Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Alipurdur will receive very heavy rainfall on Wednesday morning and all the districts south of the Himalayas will receive heavy rainfall on Thursday.

In northeastern India, southerly winds are blowing from the Bay of Bengal and heavy to torrential rains of up to 12 cm are likely in the next two to three days, Kumar said.

He added that rainfall will increase over the southern peninsula in the next three to four days and we can expect 6-7 cm rainfall over Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

After a relative respite of two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) today issued an orange alert for 11 districts in Kerala, indicating heavy rains on Wednesday (October 20). The IMD had issued the alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Nkulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts on October 20. The weatherman also issued an orange alert for 12 districts on Thursday. On October 21, an orange alert was issued for all districts except Kannur and Kasaragod.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted more rains in Odisha on Wednesday (October 20), which has been lashed by heavy rains triggered by a low-pressure area for the past three days. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours, while water levels in Subarnarekha, Budhabalang and Jalaka rivers in north Odisha are rising, the weatherman said. The meteorological department has predicted light to moderate rain or thundershowers in coastal and inland areas.

In the capital city of Delhi, although sunny weather was expected, the rainfall in October 2021 was unusually high. October this year was the rainiest month in the city since 1960, when the capital received 93.4 mm of rainfall. In October this year, the city has recorded 94.6 mm of rainfall.
