With the theme “Go Red! Be a Heart Hero!”, the foundation aims to raise much-needed funds for the organization’s outreach programs.

“The 5K Run for Heart is designed to educate Jamaicans on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and to raise much-needed funds. We want Jamaicans to become heart heroes,” said Karen Anderson, Senior Manager of Marketing and Fund Development at the Heart Foundation. “This year, we will inspire Jamaicans to become heart heroes… by making and keeping a commitment to care for their hearts, their relatives and their friends.”

HFJ will be partnering with Running Events Limited to launch Heart Month 2020 at Emancipation Park on February 2, 2020.

Anderson further explained: “Statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that heart disease is the largest cause of death worldwide, therefore, the Foundation is committed to reducing heart disease mortality in Jamaica by at least 25% by 2025.”

Heart disease remains the number one killer in Jamaica and around the world, even though 80% of premature heart attacks and strokes are preventable. A healthy diet, regular physical activity and not using tobacco products are key to prevention. It is also important to check and control risk factors for heart disease and stroke, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar or diabetes.

Register Early

The registration period is from October 21, 2019 to January 24, 2020. Early bird discounts are available from October 21, 2019 to December 16, 2019.

The 2020 Run for the Heart 5K race will be a way to get people off the couch and to the finish line as it will feature a 2K run designed to give children and beginners a chance to share in the motivation to keep Jamaicans healthy.

The February 2019 event attracted more than 1,000 runners and walkers, with plans to triple that number for the next edition. Part of the proceeds from this year’s event will offset costs associated with upgrading the equipment used by HFJ and keep the organization’s screening services at a subsidized price.
