July 22, 2024 (El Fasher) – Violence in El Fasher, North Darfur, has caused more than 5,000 casualties, including 750 deaths, since fighting resumed last May, according to officials from the state’s Ministry of Health.
An earlier agreement between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to avoid conflict in El Fasher collapsed nearly a year later, leading to the RSF’s siege of the city on May 10 and the subsequent violence.
Ibrahim Khater, director general of the North Darfur Ministry of Health, told Sudan Tribune that the death toll from the conflict has reached 750, with another 4,700 injured. Khater highlighted the serious challenges facing the health care system, especially the severe shortage of medical staff as the ongoing violence has caused many doctors to flee the region.
According to the United Nations, the fighting that broke out on May 10 has displaced hundreds of thousands of people from El Fasher, with many seeking refuge in the Jebel Marra area controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement.
Carter stressed that the remaining hospitals in North Darfur urgently need more than 200 doctors of various specialties. He noted that most of the remaining medical staff in El Fasher chose to stay at home or relocate to other parts of the state in search of safety.
The official also revealed that there is a severe shortage of essential medicines, including those for malaria and those for chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cancer. The ministry has been procuring medicines from local markets, company warehouses and import channels to address these shortages.
Despite the enormous challenges, Carter thanked the continued support of health partners, including charities, national and international organizations, and individuals from Darfur who have worked tirelessly to provide aid and alleviate suffering in El Fasher.
Shelling and attacks, mainly by the Rapid Security Forces, have halted operations of many hospitals and health centres in the city, including in the south, while also hampering the delivery of critical supplies to El Fasher.
