(CNS): The Department of Health and Wellness says a false “news report” currently circulating via email, WhatsApp and social media claiming that two cases of Mpox have been confirmed in the Cayman Islands is a fabrication. The Mpox outbreak started in East Africa but has now spread to Asia and Europe. No cases have been reported in the Caribbean.
Fourteen countries in Africa have reported cases of Mpox, and four countries (Sweden, Thailand, the Philippines and Pakistan) have reported cases outside the continent.
The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) said no cases of Mpox have been reported in the Caribbean Community to date, but that it has implemented “enhanced surveillance to rapidly identify possible cases, which is critical to ensure the safety and health of our citizens”.
Deacon Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada and Chair of the Caribbean Community, said: “I urge all citizens to remain vigilant and informed of Mpox and its spread through CARPHA and local health authorities. It is important to be alert to any unusual rashes or lesions, especially if individuals have a travel history to areas where Mpox cases have been reported, and to seek medical attention immediately if signs or symptoms are observed.
“In addition, reporting any suspected cases to local health authorities is a critical step in conducting further epidemiological investigations. As Heads of Government, we strongly support strengthening the Ministries of Health of Member States and Associate Member States to ensure effective surveillance efforts and public health strategies, increase public awareness of Mpox, and promote our shared preparedness.”
Due to the emergence of new variants of the new coronavirus, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the disease a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), the highest level of alert.
