SearchGPT is designed to allow users to easily find the original source of information. The system automatically adds links directly to publishers’ websites in response to queries, helping users quickly navigate to the original material. However, many media outlets are concerned that OpenAI and Google’s AI search engines may provide short but comprehensive answers. In this case, readers do not need to click on the link, so publishers’ websites will receive less traffic, resulting in a loss of advertising revenue. OpenAI said it is not yet clear how much traffic SearchGPT will be able to send to publishers. They plan to learn more about user behavior during testing. But publishers will be able to control how their content is used in the OpenAI search engine. They can prevent the model from training on their data but still remain in the search results.

Last September, OpenAI launched a web search feature for ChatGPT called Browse with Bing, but it looks much more primitive than SearchGPT. SearchGPT will be free at launch. So far, there are no ads, and the company will obviously have to solve the problem of profitability soon.
