“Generally speaking, a mass of warm air is moving across the country, forming a northwesterly flow that is bringing warm air in from the Tasman Sea.”
Mr O’Connor said it would be a “great way” to achieve forecast higher temperatures, with Hastings and Napier expected to reach 20C on Saturday.
She said the heating weather Overnight temperatures will also rise to around 13°C with isolated rainfall expected.
The weather is expected to change on Sunday evening with winds turning southerly over the area, possibly bringing rain.
Looking ahead to Sunday night and Monday, temperatures will be “colder, below 10 degrees Celsius, but not freezing, probably around 8 to 9 degrees Celsius,” she said.
A strong northwest wind warning has also been issued for the region between 11pm Saturday and 6pm Sunday.
She said gusts could reach 100 kilometres per hour, however. Hastings and Napier.
“If you’re walking on top of an exposed hill, there are going to be strong winds.”
Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to be around 15°C on Monday and 12°C on Tuesday at the start of the week, with frosts at night.
“It will feel a lot colder, especially compared to Sunday.”
