The global near-surface average temperature on Sunday was 17.09 degrees Celsius, slightly higher than the 17.08 degrees Celsius recorded in July last year.
Over the past week, a heat wave has spread across large swathes of the United States, Europe and Russia.
Copernicus confirmed to Reuters that the average daily temperature on July 21 appeared to have surpassed the previous record, which dates back to 1940, recorded last year.
Last year, record levels were broken for four consecutive days, from July 3 to June 6.
The Copernicus report said that starting in June 2023, temperatures hit record highs for 13 consecutive months.
Some scientists believe that 2024 could be the hottest year ever, even surpassing 2023 to become the hottest year on record.
Climate change and the El Nino weather phenomenon, which ended in April, have contributed to rising temperatures this year.
